Is Your High Speed Internet Not Going So Fast? How To Speed It Back Up Again

Posted on

If your once lightning fast Internet connection has slowed down on you, the problem could be easy to fix. Doing it yourself can save you a lot of money, and you can get your fast connection back much quicker. Follow the tips below to give your connection an energy boost.

Reset Internet Connection

Sometimes all it takes is a reset to speed up your Internet. First, turn off your computer. If you look on the back of your router, you should see an on and off switch. Change it to off.  If you have a modem in the mix, unplug it from either the wall outlet, or by removing the power cord from the back of the modem.  Count to 30, and then turn your wireless router on. Wait one minute, and then plug your modem back in, if you use one. Power your computer back on. Open your Internet browser to see if you have a fast connection again.

Check Wi-Fi Signal

The problem you are having could be your Wi-Fi signal. Even though it may not look very nice, your wireless router should be up front and center on your desk or wherever it is sitting. It should not have any obstructions in front of or around it, and it should be free from any walls. The antennas should be vertical.

Other things can interfere with the Wi-Fi signal, such as smartphones, microphones, dryers, and other appliances. To take care of this problem, you can purchase a wireless dual band router. If you do not want to, then move the router away from whatever is interfering with it. It may take some trial and error of you moving it around the room to find the fastest connection.

Turn the Channel

Just like you do with the remote for your television, you can also change the channel on your router. You may be set to the same channel as a neighboring Wi-Fi network. Changing to a different one stops your routers from interfering with each other. In most cases, there are three channels to choose from: 1, 6, or 11. Try each channel to see which one gives you the fastest connection. To change the channel, refer to your router user's manual for these instructions.

If you continue to have problems with a slow Internet connection, contact your Internet service provider (ISP), as they may be having the problem instead of you. Contact a company like Virginia Broadband, LLC for more information.
